New Nikon Speedlight SB-500 Flash Light review

I have a Nikon SB 400 and an SB 800. Although I like them both, the 400 is limited to horizontal shots only if you’re trying to bounce the light. The 800 is pretty large for occasionally shooting, so I was looking for a compromise and this Speedlight is perfect for that.

A flash that does everything

This flash, not only fills in, uniformly, but it also has LEDs on the front that can be switched on whenever you record a video. This thing runs rings around the built-in flash of my Nikon D7500...#sweepstakes

Nikon's SB-500 entry-level flashgun offers a GN (guide number) of 24 at ISO 100 and 24mm, which is relatively low, especially for the price... The back of the unit houses a single dial for mode selection, and two buttons to control your settings, which is less comprehensive than others in test.

no manual - too limiting

I returned this, but was charged a service fee to return. Will NEVER buy from RITZ again.

The Nikon SB-500 is a good small flash at close range, as advertised. The light can be diffused and create very pleasing portraits. The LED light is also acceptable at close range, comes in handy for talking head video and product shots. Easy to learn, a lot of the control is in the camera menus .

Little powerhouse

Perfect size for travel and use of two AA batteries makes it universal. Versatile and plenty of power. Off-camera control via CLS is a breeze -- albeit only channel 3 (strange - the SB-600 initally defaults to channel 3 also). I am sad it can not be used as a commander -- except on D750 and D810.

Nikon SB-500 Review

The Nikon SB-500 speedlight was announced in September of 2014 together with the Nikon D750 and Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G lens. Sitting above the compact SB-300 and below the larger and more powerful SB-700, the SB-500 is targeted at beginners and enthusiasts, who want something more capable than a...

A nice light travel speed light

This is a nice, light, capable speed light. Reasonably powerful and 1/2 the weight of a SB-900/910, the size also makes it easy to carry along, even in a pocket. There are some limitations that you need to recognize, especially if using as a master or commander with an older Nikon camera, but as an...

Very useful addition to my P7800

First use was fill-in flash for 'informals' at a wedding. Performed faultlessly with a P7800.

Easy To Pack; Easy to Use; Lightweight; Perfect For Fill-in Flash; Reliable; Strong Construction
