REVIEW: Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at this popular budget standard zoom, which is currently offered as the kit lens with the Nikon D7000 camera.

Useful 'walkabout' zoom range; Decent optical performer; Very good value; VR performs well; Lightweight

AF noticeably slower at telephoto end of the zoom; CA at 105mm and apertures below f/11

Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX Lens

While I hope to create a full Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX Lens, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools available on the site.

Nikon's AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm G ED VR has optics that are surprisingly very good for a lens in this price range

In order to do my part in the economic recovery I recently bought a new Nikon D300, a SB-900 flash and wanted to get a good all around lens to keep on it most of the time. My criteria were it had to have wide angle, a decent telephoto range and have VR (VR = Vibration Reduction) - Nikon's...

I avoided kit lenses from reading comments on the internet, this lead to annoying others by having to change lens a lot and having to move position all the time in this focal range. So I bought this cheaper lens for when I did not care and the others did.

It is a light, versatile lens that can give very sharp images; Value for money is super

The lens has optical disadvantages at the extremes of its range (see real testing results for this); It does feel cheap with the plastic and the focus ring (I do focus manually regularly) does not feel professional

Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor review by tamiry

I bought this lens with the Nikon D7000. At first I thought that the lens will produce standard image but to my surprise the pictures come out amazing. The lens is very easy to use and is suitable for any use, whether wide or close-up photography.

easy to use; vr; sharpness; price

distortion at low focal length

Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor

I bought this second hand about 18 months ago and I'm really pleased with the results. It is a surprisingly good lens and only comes off the camera if I need something with a longer reach or true macro capability. The VR is only really needed in low light but it certainly works when you want it to.

Affordable VR lens; light weight and sharp enogh for me

At the price; I can't think of one

Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR - Review / Test Report

The Nikkor is a DX lens with a reduced image circle specifically designed for APS-C DSLRs. Its focal range is equivalent to a 27-157,5mm lens on a full frame camera. This attractive zoom range combined with optical image stabilization so far has only been available from Sigma in form of the 18-125mm...

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens review

The iPhone 14 isn't much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it's still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades
