Netatmo Welcome review: A near perfect no-hidden-fees indoor security camera with face recognition

Netatmo's approach to security cameras is refreshing. In a market that's filled with companies limiting what you can do with the hardware you bought just in order to get you to sign up for a monthly subscription, Netatmo asks only that you purchase its camera.

Your storage The Netatmo Cloud only saves screenshots of videos as a backup; The videos are stored on the local MicroSD card and can be uploaded to your own Dropbox or FTP server, Face recognition Netatmo recognizes people, learns with time, and knows when someone is home or has left, Privacy You...

No portability There's no backup power; Without the MicroUSB plugged in, the Netatmo camera shuts down and disconnects, Limited placement options You can connect a power bank to move it momentarily to a different location, but you're still limited by having to place it flat on a surface.

Netatmo Welcome Indoor Security Camera review

I reviewed the Netatmo Presence Outdoor Security camera a few months ago and really, REALLY enjoy using it because it uses deep learning to tell the differences between people, animals, cars, and other motions thus virtually eliminating unnecessary motion detection alerts.

Recordings are 1080p; Facial recognition fairly accurate; Records only videos we deem important; No subscription fees - records videos locally and to my Dropbox account (or personal FTP server if I had one

Did not always send notifications when one of us passed in front of the camera; One-way audio

Review: Netatmo Welcome

The Tomorrow Children is a massive departure for developer Q-Games, who are best known for their PixelJunk series of games as addicting and stylish romps, are here with an entirely new endeavour and it's nothing like they've done before. The whole premise behind the game is a resource gathering...

It's a nice looking piece of tech; Facial Recognition; Easy Setup

Placement issues; Sometimes would not recognize me

Netatmo Welcome Review

The days of hiding a home security camera away because it's an ugly intrusive box are gone. The Netatmo Welcome is something you'll not only be happy to put on display, but there's a good chance it'll blend in with the decor in many modern homes, so it'll do what most cams can only dream of - hide...

Beautiful design; Clever face recognition tech; No recurring fees; Easy to set up

Placement can be difficult; Faces aren't always recognized; Wi-Fi range is limited; No battery backup

Netatmo's Welcome home security camera gets facial recognition right

Most Wi-Fi security cameras follow a simple formula: sleek pieces of hardware, motion and sound detection features, a mobile app where a live stream can be watched, and a subscription platform that lets you choose the footage you want to keep.

You'll be happy to display the Welcome anywhere in your home thanks to its sleek, understated design, Welcome detects faces like a champ and learns the ones you identify pretty quickly, No subscription fees; having all your video clips saved locally to a microSD card and available at any time is...

Image quality is significantly reduced when your mobile device and the Welcome are not connected to the same network at the same time; Removing false or unwanted faces from the detected pool is a time-consuming process; Lag time in live video stream is the longest between it; the Nest Cam; and the...

Netatmo Welcome Home Camera With Facial Recognition Review

The Netatmo Welcome is a great addition to your home security. It's not as hardcore as a full CCTV system, but it's more comprehensive than a simple webcam setup. Facial recognition, mobile access, a simple setup and a great design make this a fantastic all round product.

Easy to set up; User friendly design; Great mobile app; Aesthetically pleasing design; Competitive price; 8GB memory card included; Excellent camera performance

Limited availability outside of the manufacturer's website

Netatmo Welcome Smart Home Camera

Netatmo is best known for its Urban Weather Station, an elegant - albeit pricey - solution for monitoring indoor and outdoor weather conditions, so we were a bit surprised when we saw the company branching out at CES this year with the introduction of its Welcome ($200), a new home monitoring and...

Netatmo Welcome Review – Nest Cam's face-recognizing rival

If a smart home is truly smart, it should know who's inside it. That's the argument Netatmo makes with its new Welcome camera, promising Dropcam-style streaming video but combined with facial-recognition.
