At first when the trailer came out I was initially excited for the game, the combat looked great, the driving was diverse and exciting, I was pumped. On the day that I received the game, I was surprised.

With the release of a new Mad Max movie earlier this year, it's no surprise that Warner Bros. would want to release a video game that ties into the movie for some quick cash. I was ready to dismiss the game at E3 for those exact reasons, but playing it gave me second thoughts.

Open world game that takes strong cues from Assassin's Creed; Batman: Arkham Asylum; and inFamous and incorporates them very; very well; and includes unique car combat that nevers gets tiresome; as harpooning drivers out of cars never stops being fun

Not much innovation since it does take those cues from other games; no deep story; lots of fetch quests; and open world mechanics can be tedious

There is no question we've all waited far too long for an open world post-apocalyptic Mad Max game. An adventure with Mad Max blazing around sand filled wastelands with his V8 Interceptor taking on gangs of marauders as he searches for gas and water seems like a no-brainer.

"In a world gone mad. Only the savage survive." These are the words of Mad Max 's developers Avalanche Studios . As such, it sets up what should be an epic romp in a post-apocalyptic world full of rich, colourful and nuanced characters.

I'm going to be honest right from the outset and tell you all that I am incredibly unsure about this game, for a number of reasons. Mad Max was part of my childhood, and a franchise I remember well, and that crazy universe seems to be almost tamed down in the game, which disappoints me deeply.

Mad Max might be formed from familiar parts of other games, but the car-wrecking, skull-cracking chaos it creates is a rewarding and expansive adventure.

There's a huge open world to adventure through however you see fit; A great balance of on-foot and car action full of emergent stories; Very satisfying character and skill progression

A paper-thin story; Poor mission system and tracking; Too many bland American voices for such an iconic Australian character
