Mad Catz R.A.T. 8+ review: Back from the dead

Eminently customizable; Uses a reliable PMW3389 sensor; Feels durable;

Customization options aren't always intuitive; Heavy, even with the weights removed; Hard to know whether Mad Catz peripherals are more reliable nowadays;

Mad Catz R.A.T. 8+ Review

The R.A.T. 8+, Mad Catz's high-end wired gaming mouse, defies design conventions for its kind. It has customizable dials, as well as adjustable parts that you need tools to tune. Its exposed parts and boxy design look more like something out of a 1980s cyberpunk novel than a mouse from 2019, but it manages to make these unusual traits feel and look good. Though not on the same scale as building or modding your own tech, it draws out that natural desire to tinker and make your mouse your own, even if it's just by pushing the palm rest back a pip. It stands among the best conventional gaming mice and does so in style. And Now for Something Completely Different… The R.A.T. 8+ is, as you might expect from a first glance, a rather complex mouse to grok. Its 11-button, right-handed, FPS-style design—with an extended thumb rest and a "sniper" button that sits near the tip of your thumb—provides lots of functionality. With a unique look and parts you can swap out for comfort, the Mad Catz R.A.T. 8+ is a high-end gaming mouse that should tickle tinkerers, as well as players seeking lots of buttons and flexibility.

Adjustable parts provide unique customization options; Good feel for a variety of hands; Unique, partly open-shell look

Expensive for a wired mouse; Adjustable features introduce small parts that are easy to misplace; Configuration software feels a bit lightweight

Loads of features and very comfortable

The amount of customization options means that this is a perfect fit for any hand. It's also got a super useful thumb wheel, side buttons, and even rgb thrown in. Definitely recommend

Mad catz rat8+

Excellent service by jbhifi couldn’t have asked for better, purchased online as they don’t have these on the shelf, was very frustrating to get anywhere else and mad catz don’t reply, went for rat8 as it’s wired, the rat9 is wireless but low battery life and you get 2 cells and a charger but if your gaming I would recommend wired always, this mouse is insane it has so many custom features I’m a claw user so was worried about the flat design but it comes with 3 interchangeable pieces so you can raise the back as you see fit also great for csgo as it has the slow down button on your thumb wich can be slid back and forth with an inbuilt tool, also all the colours can be customised with the softwere wich is easily downloadable from their website, jbhifi delivered on time for Xmas too and I even got an email from them with an update on my shipment

love the mouse but wish they would improve it.

Been a fan of the rat mouse line for years, owned a rat7, rat8 and now a rat8+. it is unfortunate that they haven't improved the product since its inception, only upgrading the sensor each generation. yes the side buttons will break in a year or two, yes the feet wear down in 3 years, yes the mouse clicks feel slightly mushy (only a tiny bit mushy, its still clicky). despite these downsides I still love it.
