Lenovo Smart Clock with 4" Touch Screen ZA4R0001AU review

Rather than simply squeezing the current Google Smart Displays into a smaller package, the Lenovo Smart Clock has been built to be an alarm clock first and foremost, which makes it easier to use and better suited for its primary function.

Works well as an alarm clock; Neat looks and small body; Works well as a smart assistant

Display feels underutilised; Some features missing from full-size Smart Displays

If you're a Google dependent user then the integration of Calendar, Alarms, Nest Cam, Routines and more will make the Smart Clock a great integration and control hub for your smart home.

Great way to easily integrate into your Google life (including Calendar / Alarms / Weather / Nest camera / Spotify and more); No built-in camera alleviates security concerns; Gradual wake-up and customisable alarms; Physical volume controls; Auto-brightness and mono screen for good bedside manner -...

"Hey" and "OK" Google summons still irksome and can't be changed; Auto-brightness isn't on by default; Can't mute mic on/off switch; Google Home app could be simpler overall; An OLED panel would be an even savvier choice

Though we miss the more visual card style of larger Google Home devices, the Lenovo Smart Clock gets your bedroom connected in an unassuming, useful form factor.

Compact design; Great smart home features; Surprisingly good sound

UI loses visual flair; Lack of camera may disappoint

Other devices do more, but this is the slickest alarm clock you can buy (for now)

Charming design; Auto-brightness works well; Surprisingly loud; Morning Routines well implemented

Screen doesn’t do much beyond core features; No video; Could do with more cards

: Available from 3 June in the UK, Lenovo’s Smart Clock is a brilliant bedside companion

Very small; Cheap; Sounds good

No Google Photos on homescreen; Can’t be woken by radio without setting up routines

Does your alarm clock need to be smart? The Lenovo Smart Clock makes a surprisingly good argument for it - here's why your next smart display might be a small one

fully embraced the smart display, and whilst many vendors are yet to take their first tentative steps, the Chinese tech firm is already rolling out a new variation on the theme, and it's really rather good.

The Lenovo Smart Clock is undoubtedly the cutest smart display out there, but it takes more than soft-touch charm to earn a spot on the nightstand. The $79 addition to the company’s smart display range is now the cheapest way to get the Google Assistant with a touchscreen, but it’s actually an...

Cheapest Assistant-powered smart display so far; Small; cute design is perfectly nightstand-sized; Display won't disturb your sleep; USB charging port on back is useful

Nest Hub isn't much more expensive after promotions; Not every Assistant reply uses the display; No Google Photos screensaver

Lenovo Smart Clock with 4" Touch Screen ZA4R0001AU review

The Lenovo Smart Clock with Google Assistant is an excellent night stand companion. It generally shows your selected clock face, but if you swipe right on the screen you can access information about the weather, your calendar, your upcoming alarms, and whatever music you are listening to.

Responsive IPS touchscreen; Small and sleek design; Google Assistant-enabled; Compatible with multiple devices; Clear audio; Easy set-up

Limited features; Lack on on-board camera (this may be a plus for some of you); Google Assistant occasionally unresponsive

Lenovo Smart Clock with 4" Touch Screen ZA4R0001AU review

Lenovo's Smart Clock and Amazon's Echo Spot are appealing because they combine conveniences of a virtual assistant with a piece of technology that almost everyone needs. Tiny smart displays could make useful smart alarm clocks purely because we all need something to wake us up each morning.

Small design that fits easily on a desk or nightstand; USB port for charging other devices; No camera; Speakers get quite loud, and sound quality is decent for such a small device.

Slow performance; Currently can only show feeds from Nest home security cameras; Google Home app is still a mess; Cannot show all of the visual information that the larger Nest Hub or Smart Display can.
