LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt Review (SSD)

Durability and style once again collide with LaCie's latest portable drive release. The Rugged Thunderbolt portable drive puts a new spin on LaCie's lineup by enhancing shock, dust, and water resistance.

Excellent physical data protection; Great performance for read and write; Integrated Thunderbolt cable

Lose USB 3.0 port and activity light when port cover is in place

Bad unit

I have a 2T Rugged Lacie drive and it has operated flawlessly for years. On that basis I purchased a 5T unit. Unfortunately the drive overheated immediately and needed to be replaced. Here is where the real trouble begins. The unit is under warranty, I called for replacement directions.

I like that the thunderbolt and USB-C connection will work when I finally upgrade to a new Mac after my laptop, a late 2011 Macbook Pro finally croaks, though it's just slow, not really failing. I bought two of these and rotate them as A & B time machine backup drives. I sleep well at night.

Fast and reliable

This is now my main backup drive and everything about it is fast. Besides, for me (I work in petroleum exploration), ruggedness a very important factor, which is why I went with the SSD design in the first place.

Fast, fast, fast..; and reliable

All good; as far as I am concerned

LaCie Rugged RAID 4TB

This drive is very easy to use. I store music applications with their contents on it. It's works as expected, although not as fast as an SSD drive. I use it with a MacBook Pro. Note: there's only one TB connection, so you can't daisy chain it.

LaCie Rugged USB3.0 256GB SSD Thunderbolt Series

I'm a big fan of LaCie products mainly because they are the only ones delivering portable solid state drives accompanied with USB3.0 super fast connections. I was running a bit low on storage so I decided to get a portable storage medium to move my media files over to leave more space on my computer...
