Far Cry New Dawn

It's only been a year since Far Cry 5 offered some subtle yet much needed changes to its own open-world shooter formula, but now we have another entry in the series ready to leap into action – and a canonical sequel, at that.

A more fun and colourful setting; Lots of crafting options; Expedition missions are great

Far Cry on a smaller scale; Still same old Far Cry formula; Twins are forgettable foils

Far Cry New Dawn Review

Another in a long line of strange Far Cry spin-offs , New Dawn actually takes place after Far Cry 5. About 26 years after, to be precise, which takes the open-ended people-shooter into the post-apocalypse.

Stunningly pretty; Joseph continues to be captivating; New abilities are fun; Combat is still great; Stunningly pretty; Joseph continues to be captivating; New abilities are fun; Combat is still great

Many changes feel superfluous; Missing features from FC5; Truly superfluous microtransactions; A handful of bugs

Far Cry New Dawn review: What comes after the nuclear storm

In terms of general feel, New Dawn's gameplay is precisely what you would expect from Far Cry, but the longer you play the game, the more you notice how Ubisoft's tweaks to the weapon and perks systems, along with enemy strength, have bred a subtly different feel to proceedings.

Home base system and Expeditions add a new spin; Cleverly reworked weapon system; Generous with Perk points; Great art direction; Good underlying environmental destruction and generational conflict themes

Starts unpromisingly; Too similar in many aspects to Far Cry 5; Disjointed storyline; Identikit enemies

Far Cry New Dawn

The familiar brown, blighted wastelands of the apocalypse have graced far too many video games over the years – and it looks as though someone at Ubisoft said "enough".

Far Cry New Dawn Review – Sins of The Father (PS4)

If Square Enix had made Far Cry New Dawn , it would be called Far Cry V-2 , or maybe Far Cry 5: Hope County Returns . In an unusual twist. Ubisoft made a Far Cry game that was a direct sequel to the last one.

Light RPG mechanics increase challenge and replayability; People; events; and places from Far Cry 5; now with an apocalypse; Intriguing story for returning players; Great pacing between story and side activities

Still the same Far Cry at its core; First-person driving is terrible; "Non-action" moments lack interesting outcomes

Far Cry New Dawn Review

And that's the thing about Far Cry New Dawn. I've peppered it throughout here, but the game is just too much fun. It's hard to give it any other reason to play it. There's a loot loop that is pavlovian as fuck, and that's kind of almost a system metaphor for the whole game.

Far Cry: New Dawn - PlayStation 4

Fundamentally flawed through its ham fisted efforts to force the player into unreasonable narrative situations that are intended to provoke emotion from the player, but only serve to frustrate and annoy. There is nothing original in this game, and I consider it a waste of money.

Gear up to become a problem solver - Far Cry New Dawn review

Far Cry New Dawn is an awesome addition to the series, especially since it's the first sequel for another game. The combat makes you feel like a badass, but that doesn't mean you can go in without gearing up.

Awesome and fast-paced gunplay; Cast of characters are endearing and unique; Plethora of side activities; Co-op works like a dream

Main story missions won't take long to finish; Proximity limits to partner in co-op
