Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R5 is definitely an admirable performer befitting a price of $3,899 and its billing as the top dog in Canon’s R-Series mirrorless lineup. The camera has great ergonomics, even for those with large hands, and a comprehensive menu system that’s very easy to navigate.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

Further, we’ve experienced overheating across the board with Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm when shooting videos. But the cameras have never shut down on us. Practically speaking, you’re just not going to keep shooting video. You’ll give the camera a break and go do something else on set.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

A steady full-frame camera for photography

Beautiful picture quality; HIGH ISO for low-light situations; and up to 8K video recording

Can quickly become too hot when recording videos

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

Stills are absolutely gorgeous, incredible autofocus, and solid in-body image stabilization; Can shoot 8K30 and high quality 4K30 10-bit video buuuut…

The high end video modes cause the camera to overheat and it takes a million years for it to recover; video settings are wonky; dynamic range leaves a little bit to be desired.

Canon EOS R5 review

Canon's best ever stills camera, the EOS R5 is an incredibly powerful tool for almost every kind of photography. While that versatility doesn't quite extend to video, it is still a compelling hybrid option if you're aware of its limitations. The only major barrier for most of us is that price tag.

Tried-and-tested form factor; Very versatile stills camera; Incredible autofocus skills; Improved battery life; Solid IBIS system;

Not cheap; Dual memory cards will require investment; Recording limits for video shooting

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R5 delivers one of the most significant leap in camera performance of recent years. Combining a 45 MP Full-Frame CMOS sensor with a fast processor makes it possible to reach 20 FPS at full resolution and record 8K video at 30 FPS.

Class-leading image-stabilization mechanism; Superb dynamic-range; Realistic image colors; Reliable automatic white-balance system; Conservative metering; Great AF accuracy and sensitivity; Ultra-fast autofocus; Instant shutter with virtually no black out; Exposure-Priority EVF; Highly efficient...

Above average image-noise from base ISO; Anti-Alias Filter softness; Early shot-to-shot stall; Slow recovery after overheating; Asymmetric memory; Some poorly organized features; LCD hinge alignment; Missing anti-reflective coating on rear LCD; Limited battery-life

Canon EOS R5 review

The Canon EOS R5 is well-suited for just about any type of photographer, whether you shoot portraits, events, weddings, sports, family gatherings, and more. We've felt a bit let down by Canon's promises of the camera's outright video capability, but for most users, it's still a great option for getting good-quality video clips of almost anything you point it at. Power users that need the best video quality all the time won't be a good fit, but otherwise the EOS R5 is a fantastic option for almost anyone looking for a quality full-frame high-resolution mirrorless camera.

Landscape, event, portrait, and wedding photographers, as well as sports photographers that can benefit from the camera's fast burst rate in its electronic shutter mode.;

Dedicated video users wanting the best video quality will be hampered by overheating; hybrid photo/video shooters that split their time but still need top-quality video;

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

I really did like the EOS R5, despite the overheating problems, because it suited my style of shooting. For $3,900, it’s the only pure high-megapixel hybrid camera that does photography and video equally well.
