Canon EOS 6D Mark II review

Canon has certainly made the EOS 6D Mark II a more well-rounded and better specified camera than the EOS 6D, but it's not without its issues. These niggles dull what is otherwise a very nice full-frame DSLR that's a pleasure to shoot with. It will certainly please Canon users looking to make the move into full-frame photography, but others might be better served elsewhere.

Excellent Live View focusing; Comfy grip; Refined touchscreen control; Useful vari-angle display; Connectivity options;

Only 98% viewfinder coverage; Absence of 4K a disappointment; Limited AF coverage; Poor dynamic range; No USB 3.0

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Review

As it should be, the EOS 6D II is a better camera than its predecessor in almost every way. With plenty of resolution, respectable burst shooting speeds and pleasing Canon color, it's a camera that's capable of producing great images in a variety of situations. Despite this, it is simply overshadowed by competition that is made up of more capable cameras at similar or lower prices.

Social and general use, easy capture of casual video clips and those looking for a backup body for Canon full-frame glass.;

Photographers needing the best image quality for landscape work, or sports and action photographers needing a more capable autofocus system;

6D Mark II brings Canon's cheapest full-frame dSLR up to date

It's been an eventful 5 years for camera technology since Canon released its prosumer-focused full-frame dSLR, the EOS 6D, including Sony launching the first full-frame mirrorless A7 in 2013 and subsequent generations of models. So it's kind of hard to get excited about the EOS 6D Mark II, which on one hand is significantly updated over its predecessor, but on the other is basically Canon just making it current for 2017. Of course, Nikon hasn't been very busy in that segment either: its competing D610 is 4 years old.

It's the company's first full-frame dSLR with a movable LCD, which is kind of sad.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Review

The original Canon EOS 6D broke new ground in full-frame pricing when it launched in 2012 for around $2,100. Its successor, the EOS 6D Mark II, debuts at $1,999 in a body-only configuration, placing it on par with Nikon's midrange full-frame model, the D750, and signficantly more than Sony's full-frame mirrorless option, the $1,600 Alpha 7 II, both of which have earned Editors' Choice marks. The 6D Mark II offers some solid upgrades over the original model, including a better autofocus system for both stills and video, more resolution, and a vari-angle touch LCD. But image quality doesn't match up with the Nikon and Sony options. Design The 6D Mark II ($1,399.00 at Amazon) is similar in size and weight to the original 6D. It's compact for a full-frame body, measuring 4.4 by 5.7 by 2.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 1.7 pounds without a lens. Like most SLRs, it's finished in matte black, with a rubberized covering that makes it more comfortable to grip. The viewfinder is a glass pentapr...

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II improves upon its predecessor with 26-megapixel resolution, improved Live View focus, and a 45-point autofocus system, but its sensor isn't as good as competing models.

Full-frame 26-megapixel image sensor; 45-point autofocus system; Dual Pixel AF in Live view; 6.5fps continuous shooting; Vari-angle LCD; Integrated Wi-Fi and GPS

More image noise than expected; Limited dynamic range for full-frame; Small AF coverage area; Video limited to 1080p; Omits built-in flash

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Review

Introduces vari-angle touchscreen for the first time on a full-frame EOS model; Superior focusing speed in Live View mode thanks to Dual Pixel AF; Offers 5-axis movie image stabilisation; Excellent battery life;

Lacks 4K video and headphone port for audio monitoring; Upgraders can't use existing battery grip; AF points all grouped together centrally in the frame; Difficult to use exposure compensation with Auto ISO in manual mode;

Canon 6d Mark II review

The Canon 6D Mark II is good for landscape photography. Images are sharp, color-accurate, and mostly free of visual noise even in low light. That said, its dynamic range is somewhat limited, so you may lose some detail in high-contrast landscape shots.

Excellent overall image quality., Good build quality., Bright, sharp, fully-articulated screen., Great ergonomics.

Bulky design with heavy kit lens., Limited dynamic range.

Canon 6d Mark II review

I was so pumped when the Canon 6D Mark II rumors were pouring out and when it was announced . Then, early reports concerned me about the image quality; however, I was also a little hopeful that the numbers and charts wouldn’t necessarily reflect real world experience.
