Bravely Default 2 review: Innovative combat can’t fully heal a generic RPG story

Bravely Default was born to hark back to the JRPGs of yore. The genre made it big with globe-trotting adventures where slow and steady turn-based battles gave us ample time to think through each battle decision. Then came the Active Time Battle system, which speeds up the slog of traditional turn-based combat. The newer system seems better-suited to our need of twice-a-minute news feed refreshes and hot-take tweets. While Bravely Default 2 sounds like the perfect answer to those wanting a traditional take with a hint of something new, the new RPG embraces the past without stopping to understand why the systems it attempts to emulate fell out of fashion in the first place. Like its predecessor, Bravely Default 2 offers a unique spin on combat on top of a generic RPG story. As soon as the game begins, our seafaring hero is marooned on a beach after being saved by a talking crystal as he unconsciously floats through the ocean. At that moment, we’re only an amnesia cliché away from a hat t...

Strategic Brave/Default system; Useful jobs; Bosses are hard but fair; Enjoyable voice acting;

Reused music; Boring visuals; Bland gameplay loop;

Excellent story and gameplay

A beautiful and engrossing story, rich and addictive gameplay. The battles can drag on a little but you can fast forward the battles and how quickly that they play out. I have put many hours into this game and I keep coming back for more as the story and characters are wonderful and very bright and colourful

Bravely Default

If you like a solid SE rpg then the game is for you. Akin to Octopath.

Best peg I've played since Fenyx Rising.

This is a great game. Lots of side quests and monsters to build your stats, fun storyline and impressive animation during battles. Just a great time to be had.

Best RPG in a while

Most Fun I've had in a JRPG ever. With the best grind/time saving mechanics in any video game. And Excellent Music. Easy Must Buy. Don't play this for the Story. Just the Gameplay.

Bravely Default 2 review

Bravely Default 2 brings classic RPG flavor to a new world, with new heroes and a fiendish new conspiracy to uncover. It's a fun, but flawed, take on the classic Japanese RPG formula.

Wonderful localization and voice acting; Deep, intricate battle system; Devilish and well-designed encounters;

Performance issues, docked and handheld; Poor HD character model implementation

Bravely Default II (for Nintendo Switch) Review

It’s a tale as old as 1987: four heroes, four elemental crystals, and a grand journey to save the world. That’s the foundation of the first three Final Fantasy games before publisher Squaresoft (later known as Square Enix) expanded the franchise’s scope. Final Fantasy has moved on from that stark simplicity, as Square Enix explores new gameplay and storytelling ideas.  The $59.99 Bravely Default II is a game that answers an intriguing question: "What if Square Enix never moved beyond elemental crystals and its turn-based, battle system?" This second sequel (it’s the third game in the series, despite its name!) isn’t dramatically different than its predecessors, bringing those classic ideas to the Nintendo Switch with improved graphics and a new cast. Dive Into the Inner Ocean Bravely Default II places you in the sea-faring boots of a young sailor named Seth. Washed ashore on the continent Excillant after a rough storm, Seth finds himself touched by something greater. Someone ha...

If you're looking for a classic, JRPG experience, Bravely Default II is a fantastic pick up. Like the previous series entries, it brings old school role-playing into the modern era, with beautiful graphics and flexible systems.

Beautiful, diorama-like towns; Deep, flexible Job system; A slavish devotion to old-school JRPG systems

Fairly predictable story; Some side quests trend toward tedium
