Apple Watch Series 6 review: Sensors for sensors' sake?

Despite the new sensors feeling like a tick-box exercise, there's still no better smartwatch on the market. It's just that this time around it offers many features you'll want, along with many that you aren't aware you'd want, plus lots that you'll simply never use.

New dimmed display option; Display is brighter than before; Fluid performance; Lovely design options for both size options;

No game-changing improvements over Series 5; Sleep tracking raises battery charging questions; Altimeter doesn't feel well executed; Why do we have a blood oxygen monitor?;

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

Apple debuted the new Apple Watch Series 6 earlier this month and I've been testing out the new (PRODUCT)RED 44mm GPS model. At first glance it doesn't seem much different than the Apple Watch Series 5 , but there's more than meets the eye.

Gorgeous; refined hardware; Bright and useful always-on mode; Blood oxygen sensor; Sleep tracking capability; Excellent third party application support

Expensive; Battery life about the same as Series 5; Limited sleep details

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

Unlike most other smartwatches on the market, the Apple Watch Series 6 boasts a sleek rectangular design with a ceramic rear panel. Sitting on the left is a speaker and on the right is a button, microphone hole, and a digital crown that offers haptic feedback.

Always-on-Display is very bright; Feels really fast; Quicker charging

Sleep Tracking is limited; Blood Oxygen monitoring could be more useful; Battery life isn’t amazing

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

Longer battery life and faster charging; stunning new colors; potential to be an even more capable health tracker

The potential for deeper sleep analysis and even more advanced health-tracking is unrealized—for now

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

In the growing lineup of new Apple Watches, I see only two options worth considering of the three: the Series 6 and Series 3. There are two main reasons to buy an Apple Watch: health and fitness or a fun complimentary phone gadget. Those both leave the Apple Watch SE in a strange place.

Quicker-charging battery with same all-day life; Brighter outdoor display; Sleek new colors; Same great tracking abilities with a new sensor for SpO2 and the tried-and-true ECG; More activity tracking modes added to an already long list.

Sleep tracking is less detailed than competitors' while being no better than any of them; Activity trends could still use more guidance; Family Setup seems rather pointless; give us Android phone compatibility!, Aging looks, even with new colors; Still an expensive watch.

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

Apple Watch Series 6, like its previous two predecessors (and arguably even earlier versions), is the world's best health and fitness tracker. With a blood oxygen monitor and always-on altimeter added to the ECG monitor, the heart rate monitor, fall detection, emergency SOS calling, and noise...

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

When it comes to smartwatches, it’s Apple against the world. It’s not that there aren’t plenty of other products to choose from — it’s more that the company has just utterly dominated the space to such a point that any other device is relegated to the realm of “ Apple Watch alternatives.

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS PRODUCT(RED) Aluminium Case with RED Sport Band M00A3X/A review

If you’re in the market for a great smartwatch, this is the way to go. You’ll have to be an iPhone user, unfortunately, but the Apple Watch Series 6 takes the already-awesome Apple Watch Series 5, and makes it slightly better.

Bright; always-on display; Great fitness tracking; Smooth; intuitive performance

Battery still average; Still no Android support

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

With an unrivaled user experience, fantastic apps, and potentially lifesaving health and fitness features, the Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch you can buy.

Measures blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) on demand; Always-on altimeter for real-time elevation tracking; Improved wrist-down screen brightness; WatchOS 7 adds a handwashing countdown timer and sleep tracking; Fast new processor; Best third-party app selection; Attractive new watch colors and band...

Expensive; Offers only a slight battery life improvement

Apple Watch Series 6 40mm GPS Blue Aluminium Case with Deep Navy Sport Band MG143X/A review

The best smartwatch for iPhone users just got better

The already bright always-on screen is now brighter; Charging is faster; Processor is more powerful

Overall an iterative update over its predecessor; Best watchOS 7 features also coming to older versions; Apple Watch SE offers similar functionality
